How Do You Staff a Cross-Docking Operation for Peak Volume?

Peak volume exposes staffing gaps that a normal day never reveals. A crew that handles routine volume comfortably can fall behind fast once inbound and outbound trailers both spike at once.
Cross-training matters more here than in most warehouse roles. Because freight needs to move straight through rather than sit in inventory, a bottleneck at any single role (e.g., unloading, sorting, or loading) slows the whole flow. Staff that can shift between these roles as volume shifts through the day handle peak surges better than a rigid, single-role crew.
Temporary or flex labor works best when it’s planned ahead, not called in reactively. Bringing in temporary staff mid-surge means training time you don’t have during your busiest hours. Building a relationship with a staffing partner and running seasonal or predictable peaks with pre-planned flex labor gets people up to speed before volume actually hits.
Shift overlap at peak transition points reduces handoff gaps.
