What Safety Hardware Does a Cross-Docking Platform Need?

A cross-docking platform needs safety hardware addressing two separate risks, equipment and cargo going off the edge, and personnel moving safely on and around an elevated working surface. Edge protection prevents equipment and cargo from rolling off the platform. Curbs, raised edges, or barrier rails along open sides keep a forklift’s wheels, or cargo shifting during transfer, from going over the edge. This matters most at any point where the platform’s perimeter isn’t directly connected to a trailer bed or dock face. An open edge with no barrier is an active fall and roll-off risk during normal operation, not just an edge case.

Handrails address pedestrian safety, a separate concern from equipment roll-off. Anywhere personnel walk near an elevated edge – whether accessing the platform, moving along a walkway, or standing near active forklift traffic – handrails and consistent fall protection reduce a real and distinct risk from the equipment-focused edge protection above. General OSHA walking-working-surface and fall-protection standards apply to elevated work surfaces broadly. Confirm your specific configuration against current requirements rather than assuming platform-specific curbs alone satisfy pedestrian fall protection.

Kickplates close the gap curbs and handrails leave open. A standard handrail assembly typically protects against a person falling but leaves a gap near floor level where a foot, a tool, or small equipment can still slide off the edge. Kickplates address that lower gap specifically, and they’re a common OSHA-adjacent requirement wherever elevated platforms see foot traffic.

Access points need controlled, clearly defined entry and exit, not ad hoc stairs or ramps. Stairways, access ramps, or ladders onto the platform should be purpose-built and clearly marked, rather than improvised, particularly on a platform that sees frequent access by multiple personnel throughout a shift.
